The Big Five

In Africa, the Big Five game animals are the Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, Elephant, and Cape Buffalo. The term was originally coined in the late 1800s by big-game hunters, and refers to the five most dangerous animals in Africa to hunt on foot. It is a term now also widely used by safari tour operators and visitors. All of these species are now decreasing in population—lions in particular are struggling, having lost 94 percent of their original habitat.
