First Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds have been on my ‘bucket list’ for quite a while now, in fact for so long that I was beginning to give up hope of ever seeing any. So, here I am in Mariposa, California and the Guest House that we are staying at has hummingbird feeders and… Hummingbirds.
These little birds are quite diminutive and move so fast that they are difficult to keep up with even without a camera in hand and I quickly learned that photographing these tiny birds is going to be a steep learning curve. I have experimented with many of the settings in terms of shutter speed to freeze / blur the wings; aperture to get enough of the bird in focus and of course high ISO even in bright light. Add to this that their colours only really come to life when the light hits them at the right angle and there’s a lot to comprehend.
