I attended a studio workshop led by Nicola Selby on the subject of dance photography; this was held at Velocity Studios in Coppull near Chorley, Lancashire. The intention was to gain some knowledge of how to capture this genre of photography and to grasp some of the key learning points.
There were four dancers in attendance, two from a ballet background and two from a more contemporary style. We quickly picked up the basic lighting techniques and then focus was quickly on to the dancers and their technique.
I initially photographed Chris in the studio and then Rowan with Annie, again in the studio. As always at Velocity there is opportunity to move outside the studio and into the mill itself where there is plenty of scope to do something different. Chris and Amy were my subjects here and we created some dramatic and very ‘arty’ scenarios. Below are some of the shots from the day.
